Gold Rush Athlete FAQ

Please see information below on what to wear and what to expect during your time at Gold Rush Wrestling Academy. Most importantly , we provide hygiene tips. Wrestling is a contact sport. Maintaining good hygiene before and after practice is very important.

 What should my child wear?

  • Spandex undergarments are recommended, but underwear is fine.

  • Athletic shorts and short sleeve shirts are the most comfortable. Please keep hair tied back and out of the face.

  • Athletes are not required to have wrestling shoes, but it is recommended. Without shoes, it can become uncomfortable once we move into contact. If they do not have shoes, we recommend they  go barefoot to prevent slipping. We have a few pairs of older shoes at the gym. You can also purchase them online or at any athletic store.

  • Headgear, mouthpieces, and kneepads are optional.

What should athletes have to drink?

  • Water, Coconut Water, or Gatorade are some suggested drinks to bring. Drinks are also sold on site.

  • We also recommend a light snack an hour before practice. (Yogurt, piece of fruit, Cliff bar, etc.)

What measures does Gold Rush take to mitigate the spread of Mat-borne Illness?

  • Mats are washed before and after practice. The entire gym is sanitized every morning by our cleaning staff.

  • Shoe cleaning pans with chemical agents are placed beside the mat.

  • We provide education to parents and athletes.

What can I do as a parent to mitigate mat-borne illness?

  • Mat-borne illnesses are part of the sport. Do not be afraid. Most are avoidable with proper attention/cleaning and are easily treatable.

  •  Keep wrestling clothes separate from other clothes when washing. Also having a separate hamper for dirty wrestling clothes at home is helpful.

  • It is recommended that  athletes shower twice a day using soap and a washcloth. Once in the morning and immediately after practice. You can use medicated shampoo and body wash to help.

  •  We recommend keeping wipes for athletes to clean their face, arms, and legs after practice. Defense Body Wipes are good. This is a quick way to disinfect when you can’t get to a shower immediately.

  •  We recommend keeping two products on hand, Hibiclens and Lamisil. Hibiclens kill’s germs on contact and is used to clean scrapes and cuts immediately. Lamisil is used to treat ringworm. We have both on sight, in limited quantity, for athletes to use.

  • Examine your athlete’s arms, legs, back, and hair after practice. Please ask a coach if you’re unsure.

What kind of medical treatment is available on site?

  • All Gold Rush Coaching Staff is CPR and AED certified. We do have an AED on site.

  • We have a medical bag with tape, pre-wrap, nose plugs, wound care tools, gauze, and splints.

  • There are several parents who are either EMTs, doctors, or firefighters. If approved by the parent, they are available to help treat minor wounds or major injuries if need be.

What is the gym address and what time should I arrive at the Gym?

  • The Gym is located at 1545 W. Oakey Blvd

  •  First time athletes and parents should arrive 15 minutes ahead of time. This adequately allows time to find parking, check in, and get your temperature checked.

  • After the first visit, arriving 15 minutes before class is plenty of time.

What measures are being taken to stop the spread of Covid-19

  •  Upon entering the gym all family members will have their temperature checked.

  • We ask that only one family member at a time attends practice. We understand that sometimes situations prevent this.

  • Everyone entering the gym must wear a face mask. Once the athlete enters the mat area, they may remove the mask. Parents must continue to wear a face mask during the duration of practice.

  • There are plenty of Hand sanitizer bottles around  the gym.
